Generator Installation in Jenkintown & Montgomery County, PA

What a Standby Generator Does for Your Home

A standby (whole-home) generator sits permanently outside your house, wired directly into your electrical panel through an automatic transfer switch. The moment utility power drops, it starts on its own — usually within seconds — and powers the circuits you rely on until the grid comes back.

Unlike a portable generator, there are no extension cords, no manual starting, and nothing to refuel during a storm. Most units run off your existing natural-gas line or a propane tank, and we right-size the generator to your actual load — from essential circuits to your whole home.

Signs It’s Time to Consider a Backup Generator

If storms in Montgomery and Bucks Counties routinely knock out your power for hours, or your home relies on a sump pump or well, a standby unit ends the disruption and protects your basement and water supply.

Medical equipment, a home office, a home network, or a freezer full of food all justify automatic backup power. Wescott Electrical evaluates your needs and recommends the right generator to keep the essentials running.

We used Danny for a wide variety of jobs after we purchased our home in Malvern. Danny installed new recessed lighting, ran new electrical for our cooktop, fixed and installed new outlets / switches, and even installed our smart doorbell all for a great price! Danny was great in getting out to us in a quick turnaround to run new electrical for our cooktop before the appliance company delivered it so we could use it in time for the holidays. We’ve had no issues with any of the work Danny has done, he always showed up on time and left the area he worked in clean. We always tell our friends if they need an electrician to call Danny!!

Wescott electrical is a throw back to an era when there was a local company that was great at what they do and cared about their community. After our first project we were impressed with the work, the fairness and transparency of their quote and by their ability to balance professionalism with a personable and kind demeanor. We have continued to use them whenever the need arises. Their work is clean and quick. They care about what the job and their clients. And it’s wonderful that they’re even great with our little one, who is fascinated by the work they’re doing. We couldn’t recommend them more.

Wescott Electrical is the best electrician I have used in over 40 years of owning properties in our area. Knowledgeable, professional, friendly, and fairly priced. As opposed to larger “mill” operations, you get personal attention, better prices, and better work. They wont try to talk you into things you really don’t need. I had them handle our rehab project in Ambler and they did a great job at a great price. As a former electrical engineer, I know quality work when I see it – and that is what Wescott Electrical gave me. Highly recommended!

FAQs

How much does a whole-home generator cost to install?

Cost depends on the generator size, your fuel source and how far the unit sits from the panel and gas line. Essential-circuit systems are the most affordable; whole-home automatic units cost more but power everything. We give you an exact written quote after a quick load assessment.

Do I need a permit for a standby generator in Montgomery County?

Yes. Standby generators require an electrical permit and often a gas and inspection sign-off from your township. Wescott Electrical handles the permitting and inspection as part of every installation.

Will the generator start automatically when the power goes out?

Yes. A standby generator paired with an automatic transfer switch detects the outage and starts on its own — typically within seconds — then switches back when utility power returns, even if you’re not home.

Natural gas or propane — which is better?

If your home already has a natural-gas line, that’s usually the simplest choice because there’s no tank to refill. Propane is a strong option where gas isn’t available. We’ll recommend the best fit during the assessment.

How long does installation take?

Most residential installs are completed in one to two days on site once permits are in place. We’ll give you the full timeline with your quote.
